About the Enriched Air Nitrox Diver Course
What Will You Learn?
During the course, you'll learn how to analyse the gas in your cylinder, understand oxygen exposure and Maximum Operating Depths (MOD), plan dives using enriched air and correctly set your dive computer. You'll also cover the equipment considerations and procedures that help you use Nitrox safely and confidently.
Knowledge & Preparation
- Understand Nitrox and how it differs from standard air.
- Learn about oxygen levels and exposure limits.
- Calculate Maximum Operating Depth (MOD).
- Plan Nitrox dives and set your dive computer.
- Understand cylinder analysis and labelling procedures.
Practical Skills
- Use an oxygen analyser to check cylinder contents.
- Confirm the oxygen percentage in your gas mix.
- Calculate MOD for your chosen gas mix.
- Check cylinder labels and gas percentages.
- Follow the correct procedures before using Nitrox.
How Does the Course Work?
The Enriched Air Nitrox Diver course combines eLearning with a hands-on cylinder analysis session. You'll build your understanding of Nitrox, learn how to check your gas mix and practise the calculations and equipment checks needed to prepare for a dive. There is no in-water training, so you can focus on developing the knowledge and practical skills needed to use enriched air safely.
Work through the eLearning material to understand the basics of Enriched Air Nitrox, how it differs from standard air and why divers choose to use it.
Get hands-on with an oxygen analyser. Practise checking your cylinder's gas mix, confirming the oxygen percentage and correctly labelling your cylinder.
Put your knowledge into practice by calculating Maximum Operating Depth, understanding oxygen exposure and learning how to set your dive computer for the gas you are using.
Complete the required course assessments and demonstrate your understanding of safe Nitrox use. Once certified, you'll be able to plan and prepare for dives using suitable enriched air mixes within your training limits.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Nitrox?
Nitrox, also known as Enriched Air, is a breathing gas containing more oxygen and less nitrogen than standard air. It is commonly used by divers to extend no-decompression limits on suitable dives when planned and used correctly.
What are the benefits of diving with Nitrox?
Because Nitrox contains less nitrogen than standard air, it can reduce the amount of nitrogen absorbed during a dive and may provide longer no-decompression limits at the same depth. The benefits depend on the gas mix, depth and dive plan.
Can I complete this course while training for Open Water Diver?
Yes. You can complete the Enriched Air Nitrox course alongside your Open Water Diver training. If you are already certified, you should hold at least an Open Water Diver certification or equivalent.
Does the course involve any diving?
No. The course combines theory with hands-on cylinder analysis and dive planning. It does not require in-water training or practical diving activities.
How long does the course take?
The course duration is approximately one hour. This includes the instructor-led session and practical cylinder analysis, alongside the required eLearning and assessments.
Will I need to use an oxygen analyser?
Yes. You'll practise using an oxygen analyser to check the oxygen content of a cylinder and confirm the gas mix before using it.
Can I use Nitrox with my existing dive equipment?
Equipment must be suitable for the gas mix being used and operated within the manufacturer's specifications. You'll cover the relevant equipment considerations and safe procedures during the course.
Does Nitrox allow me to dive deeper?
No. Nitrox does not automatically allow deeper dives. Because it contains more oxygen, it can introduce a shallower Maximum Operating Depth (MOD), depending on the gas mix. Always plan and conduct dives within your training and gas limits.
What is the maximum Nitrox blend covered?
This course covers enriched air mixes up to a maximum of 36% oxygen. You'll learn how to analyse your cylinder and understand the limits that apply to the gas mix you are using.
