Dive into Ecology- With Divecrew

Beneath the Surface

For divers, the underwater world can quickly become familiar. We visit the same wrecks, reefs and dive sites, but beneath the surface there is always more to discover.

We often think of incredible marine life as something found in far-off tropical destinations, but the UK’s seas have a remarkable diversity of their own. From kelp forests and rocky reefs to wrecks, seagrass meadows and sandy seabeds, our coastline supports a huge variety of marine life. You don’t always need to travel halfway around the world to find something extraordinary — sometimes, it’s right beneath your fins.

This is our new monthly series exploring the marine world around the UK, looking at the species, habitats and environmental issues that make our seas so fascinating.

Each month, we’ll take a closer look at something different.

We’ll introduce you to one new UK marine species each month, from familiar favourites to creatures you may never have noticed on a dive. We’ll explore the habitats they depend on and discover the remarkable communities that exist within them.

We’ll also explore some of the challenges facing our seas, from changing temperatures and pollution to habitat loss and threatened species. Alongside the problems, we’ll look at the conservation, research and restoration projects working to understand and protect our marine environment.

Most importantly, we’ll look at what all of this means for divers.

Good buoyancy, responsible wildlife encounters and simply knowing what you’re looking at can all make a difference. Divers also have an opportunity to observe and record the marine life they encounter, helping us understand our underwater world.

And sometimes, the most interesting discoveries are the ones hiding in plain sight.

What is that strange creature on the wreck?

Why are hundreds of spider crabs gathering together?

What lives beneath a kelp forest?

And what can your next dive tell you about the health of our seas?

We’ll be exploring all of this and more.
